"Once upon a time, the world was covered with forests and dragons, and there were plagues, of course, but these plagues had no explanation and didn’t make you morally responsible if you got them. People were in a minority compared to everything. There was more of everything than there were people. So when you, for example, went out in your armor on your steed and you fell in love with some damsel, it stuck, you follow me here? Anyway, what I mean is that love, what made it big and important and spiritual, and murder, what made it terrible, all depended on there not being many people around. If people are scarce, you love somebody because that person’s all you’re likely to get, and the person is precious, pure gold. You see? It was sort of supply-and-demand. That’s why we had humanists. Plagues produced humanism. People were scarce and valuable and lovable. It was a seller’s market."
